Frequently Asked Questions

Is all of your beadwork Indigenous-made?

Winnipeg Trading Post carries beadwork and handcrafted items from a variety of makers and sources. Our collection includes work by Indigenous artists and beaders, Canadian and international artisans, as well as selected commercially produced pieces.

We believe in being transparent about the origin of the items we sell. When an item is Indigenous-made and the artist or community is known to us, we identify that information whenever possible. Items whose maker or origin cannot be verified are not represented as Indigenous-made.

We deeply respect the cultural significance of beadwork within Indigenous communities and are committed to supporting Indigenous artists while offering our customers a diverse selection of beadwork at a range of price points.

Does Winnipeg Trading Post purchase from the general public?

In some cases Winnipeg Trading Post may buy from the public.

There are conditions though, here are our general guidelines:

Product must be new. See below for more.
Product must be something that we consider sell-able and within the scope of our current product offering.

Product must undergo a thorough analysis by our Buyer. Our Buyer is usually in on Saturdays, we strongly suggest you call ahead before coming to the store.

Only our designated buyer and/or store owner have final say on what is approved.
IMPORTANT: Winnipeg Trading Post is NOT obligated to purchase from you. It is up to the sole discretion of our staff to further any discussion regarding selling your items to us.

Product must be new - Please do not bring used or old items. If there is bead work, beads should not be stained or faded. If there are any stains, or signs of wear, or smell of smoke, we will not accept it.

If item is made of leather, hide or fur - these materials should be clean and supple. The leather should not be stiff or cracked. The fur should be clean, soft, and free of smoke.

Do you buy leather or feathers from the public?

No. Due to hygiene concerns, Winnipeg Trading Post is required to only purchase from our suppliers. We cannot purchase leather, feathers, fabric, and clothing from the general public. Leather and feathers undergo a sterilization process prior to manufacturer packaging.

How is leather ordered?

Leather is ordered on our website by square footage. Customers can use the select pulldown on the leather product item page, to choose the square footage desired. Winnipeg Trading Post will then source an appropriately sized piece of leather that matches the amount. If we do not have a piece large enough to match, we may have to use more than one to cover the square footage.

Are there additional shipping charges for heavy and/or large orders?

Depending on your total order, some products may cause the final shipping charges to be more than our standard shipping rates. This may be due to a resulting shipping box size that is too large, or too heavy for Canada Post. Alternate methods of shipping may need to be applied.

To avoid delay in your order, a possible solution maybe for you to create separate orders, for items such as large pieces of leather, drum frames, etc.

Winnipeg Trading Post reserves the right to cancel shipping of certain orders based on final shipping cost. This includes orders that have already been marked as paid by your payment method.

Customers with orders that result in final shipping charges being more than what was indicated on your paid order, will be notified of any possible extra charges to cover the difference.

In the event that this occurs, we will contact you as soon as possible during business hours for possible product substitutions, order alterations, or alternate shipping methods.

What happens if the product is out of stock?

Winnipeg Trading Post will do its best to fulfill your complete order to your satisfaction. However, due to product availability, some products may not be available at time of fulfillment.

Winnipeg Trading Post reserves the right to not fulfill certain orders based on product availability and/or final shipping costs.

In the event that this occurs, we will contact you as soon as possible during business hours for possible product substitutions and/or order alterations.
